The Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation, owned by the RBI, insures savings, current, fixed and recurring deposits at banks, including small finance and co-operative banks. The cover is ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, principal and interest together.
Money above ₹5 lakh at one bank is not covered. Spreading deposits across banks keeps more of it insured.
