What actually lifts a score

None of this is quick, and anyone promising otherwise is selling something. These are the four things that move the number.

  • 01

    Pay every bill on time

Payment history carries the most weight, and one missed payment shows for years.

  • 02

    Keep card use low

Using well under a third of your limit reads better than running it close to full.

  • 03

Do not apply for several at once

Each application is a hard enquiry on your report, and they add up quickly.

  • 04

Consider a card against a fixed deposit

Many banks issue one because the deposit covers the limit, and using it well builds a record.

Questions About Scores

What the number means, what changes it, and why some cards do not show one.

What credit score do I need for a credit card in India?

The cards we list that publish a minimum ask for between 650 and 750, on the 300 to 900 scale used by CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. The score is one check: the bank also looks at your income, age and existing credit, and makes the final decision.

Can I get a credit card with a score below 650?

It is harder with most banks. The usual route is a secured card issued against a fixed deposit, which many banks offer because the deposit covers the limit. Paying every bill on time and keeping your card use well below the limit are what lift a score over the following months.

Does checking my own credit score lower it?

No. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and does not affect it. Applying for a card or a loan is a hard enquiry, and several of those in a short time can bring the score down, so it is worth checking which cards you qualify for before applying.

Where can I see my credit score for free?

The Reserve Bank of India requires every credit bureau in India to give you one free full credit report a year. Your bank's app or net banking often shows your score as well.

Why do some cards not show a minimum score?

Some banks do not publish one. We show only the minimum a bank states and never estimate one, so those cards are listed separately. Their pages carry the bank's full eligibility rules.
