How It's Calculated

Each month your share (12% of basic + DA) and your employer's EPF share (12% minus the 8.33% that goes to the pension scheme on pay up to ₹15,000) are added to the balance. If your employer works PF out on ₹15,000, both shares use ₹15,000; if you are not in the pension scheme, all of the employer's 12% goes to EPF.

Interest is worked out each month on the running balance at the yearly rate ÷ 12 and added once a year, the way EPFO credits it. Basic pay rises by your yearly pay rise at the start of each year, until the retirement age.

Common Questions

What is the EPF interest rate?

8.25% a year for 2025-26, as notified by EPFO. The rate is set each year, so the calculator lets you change it.

Why does my employer put in only 3.67%?

Your employer pays 12% of your basic pay, but 8.33% of it (on pay up to ₹15,000 a month) goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme, not your EPF. Above ₹15,000 the extra stays in your EPF. If you joined after 1 September 2014 with basic pay above ₹15,000 you are not in EPS, and the whole 12% goes to your EPF.

My employer puts in only ₹1,800 a month. Why?

Many employers work PF out on ₹15,000 a month, the wage ceiling, rather than your full basic: 12% of ₹15,000 is ₹1,800. Choose that option above to match your payslip.

Is EPF interest taxable?

Interest on your own yearly contribution above ₹2.5 lakh (₹5 lakh where the employer does not contribute) is taxable. Below that, EPF is tax free on the way in, while it grows and when you withdraw after five years of service.

Is the pension (EPS) included?

No. EPS pays a monthly pension from 58 and is not part of this balance.
