How It's Calculated

Yearly interest = deposit × ((1 + rate ÷ 4)⁴ − 1)

Interest is worked out every quarter and paid once a year, so each year pays four quarters compounded. The total is that yearly interest times the number of years; the deposit comes back at the end.

Common Questions

What are the Post Office time deposit rates?

For October to December 2026: 6.9% for 1 year, 7.0% for 2 years, 7.1% for 3 years and 7.5% for 5 years. The rate on the day you open the deposit stays for its whole term.

Why is the yearly interest more than the rate?

Interest is calculated every quarter and paid once a year, so each year's payment includes interest on the earlier quarters. That makes the yearly amount a little more than the rate alone suggests.

Does it save tax?

Only the 5-year deposit qualifies for the Section 80C deduction, under the old regime. The interest on every term is taxable at your slab rate.
