The interest rate is the first number everyone checks, and it should be. Even a 0.5% difference on a Rs 50 lakh home loan adds up to several lakhs over 20 years. But the rate alone does not decide the cost. Processing fees, prepayment charges and insurance bundled with the loan all add to what you actually pay.
Personal loans are unsecured, so rates are higher, typically 10% to 24% per annum. They work for emergencies, medical bills or debt consolidation. Home loans are secured against the property, which brings rates down to 8% to 10%. Most home loans in India are floating rate, meaning the EMI can change when the RBI adjusts the repo rate.
Car loans finance up to 90% of the vehicle price at 7% to 12% for new cars. Used car loans are 2% to 3% higher. Business loans vary widely. Collateral-free options go up to Rs 50 lakh but at steeper rates.
Before applying, use our home loan EMI calculator or personal loan EMI calculator to see exactly what the monthly payment will be. Check that the EMI stays under 40% of your monthly income, which is the threshold most banks use when approving applications.
