How It's Calculated

Each month the withdrawal is taken out first and the rest grows by the yearly return ÷ 12. If the balance cannot pay a full withdrawal, the last one is what is left and the withdrawals stop.

Common Questions

What is an SWP?

A systematic withdrawal plan takes a fixed amount out of a mutual fund every month and pays it to your bank, while the rest stays invested. It is common for a monthly income after retirement.

When does the money run out?

When the monthly withdrawal is more than the investment earns, the balance falls each month. 'Withdrawals paid for' shows how long it lasts; if it is shorter than the period you chose, the money runs out first.

How is an SWP taxed?

Each withdrawal is partly your own money and partly gains; only the gains are taxed, as capital gains. That often makes an SWP cheaper in tax than interest from a deposit.
