CIBIL Score Explained

What the number means, how to check it free, and the habits that raise it. No tricks, because there are none.

  • 300 to 900Score range
  • 750+Usually seen as good

What is a CIBIL score?

A CIBIL score is a three-digit number from 300 to 900 that TransUnion CIBIL calculates from your credit report: every loan and card in your name, its limit, its balance and how you have repaid it, month by month. The higher the number, the safer you look to a lender.

India has four credit bureaus licensed by the Reserve Bank of India: TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. Each keeps its own report and score, so your numbers can differ a little. “CIBIL score” has become the everyday name for all of them.

Banks check it when you apply for a credit card, a personal loan, a home loan or a car loan. It decides whether you are approved, and often the interest rate and limit you are offered.

What each range usually means

  • 750 to 900ExcellentMost cards and loans are open to you, often at better rates.
  • 700 to 749GoodMost entry and mid-range cards and loans are within reach.
  • 650 to 699FairSome lenders approve, often with a lower limit or a higher rate.
  • 300 to 649Needs workMany applications are declined. Build the score before applying.
  • NA or NHNo historyNot a bad score: there is too little credit history to score yet.

A guide only. Each lender sets its own cut-off and also checks income, age and existing loans.

How to check your CIBIL score for free

Checking your own score never lowers it. It is a soft enquiry, unlike a lender's check after you apply.

  1. 01

One free report a year from each bureau

Every bureau in India must give you one free full credit report a year: CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. That is four free looks a year if you spread them out.

  2. 02

    Your bank's app

Many banks show your score in their app or net banking at no cost, refreshed every month or so.

  3. 03

Read the report, not only the number

Check every account is yours, every limit is right, and no payment is marked late that you made on time.

🔒 Use only the bureau's own website or your bank's app. Never share an OTP with someone who calls offering to check or “repair” your score.

What raises or lowers your score

Four things, roughly in order of weight. Your income is not one of them: the score reads only how you handle credit.

  • Paying on time

Every EMI and card bill paid by its due date. A single payment 30 days or more late stays on your report for years.

  • How much of your limit you use

Using well under a third of your total card limit reads better than running cards close to full, even if you pay in full.

  • How often you apply

Each card or loan application adds a hard enquiry. Several in a few months suggest you need credit urgently.

  • Age and mix of your credit

An older card kept open, and a mix of cards and loans repaid well, show a longer record to judge.

How to improve your CIBIL score

Lenders now report to the bureaus at least every 15 days, so good habits show within weeks. Recovering from missed payments takes months of them. Anyone promising a quick fix for a fee is selling something.

  1. 01

    Clear anything overdue first

Pay overdue amounts in full. A settled account (paid less than owed) still reads badly; closed in full reads far better.

  2. 02

Set every due date on AutoPay

At least the minimum due, from a bank account that always has the money. Then pay the rest yourself.

  3. 03

    Bring card use down

Pay the card before the statement date, or ask for a higher limit, so the reported balance is a small part of the limit.

  4. 04

    Pause new applications

Space them months apart. Check which cards you qualify for before applying, not after.

  5. 05

    Keep your oldest card

Closing it shortens your history and cuts your total limit. Keep it, and use it now and then.

  6. 06

    Check your report for mistakes

A loan that is not yours, or a payment marked late that was on time, can be disputed with the bureau.

Found a mistake on your report?

Raise a dispute on the bureau's website: name the account and say what is wrong. The bureau checks with the lender and must settle it within 30 days. If it takes longer, you are entitled to compensation for the delay.

You can also write to the lender that reported it and ask it to correct its record with every bureau.

CIBIL Score Questions

The questions people ask most, answered plainly.

What is a CIBIL score?

A three-digit number from 300 to 900 that TransUnion CIBIL works out from your credit report: your loans, your cards and how you have repaid them. Lenders use it to decide whether to lend to you and at what rate. India has four credit bureaus (TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark), and "CIBIL score" is often used for any of their scores.

What is a good CIBIL score?

750 or above is usually treated as good, and most credit cards and loans are open at that level. Between 700 and 749 most entry and mid-range products are within reach. Each lender sets its own cut-off and also looks at your income, age and existing loans.

How can I check my CIBIL score for free?

Every credit bureau in India must give you one free full credit report a year, so you can get a free report from CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark each. Many bank apps and net banking also show your score at no cost. Use the bureau's own website or your bank's app, and never share an OTP with anyone who calls offering to check it.

Does checking my own CIBIL score reduce it?

No. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and has no effect. Only a lender's check after you apply for a card or loan is a hard enquiry.

How long does it take to improve a CIBIL score?

Lenders now report to the bureaus at least every 15 days, so a paid-off balance or an on-time payment shows up within weeks. Rebuilding after missed payments takes longer: usually several months of on-time payments and low card use before the change is clear.

Why is my CIBIL score NA or NH?

It means there is not enough credit history to calculate a score, for example if you have never had a loan or card, or only very recently. It is not a bad score. A card against a fixed deposit, used a little and paid in full every month, is a common way to start a record.

What should I do if my credit report has a mistake?

Raise a dispute on the bureau's website with the account and what is wrong. The bureau checks with the lender and must resolve it within 30 days; if it takes longer, you are entitled to compensation. You can also ask the lender to correct what it reported.

Are CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF scores the same?

No. Each bureau keeps its own report and its own model, so your scores can differ a little. Lenders may check one or more of them, so it is worth keeping all of them healthy by the same habits.
