SMS-Based Expense Tracker Apps for Android: How They Work and Which to Pick

SMS expense trackers turn your bank alerts into a spending diary. How they read a message, what they miss, and how six apps compare.

Your bank already keeps a diary of your spending. Every time you pay ₹450 to Swiggy on Google Pay, swipe your card at DMart or withdraw cash, an SMS lands on your phone within seconds. Most of us swipe those messages away.

An SMS-based expense tracker reads those messages for you and turns them into a tidy list: amount, date, account, shop and category. No typing, and no bank login. That is why this style of app is popular in India, where banks send an alert for almost every debit and credit.

This guide explains how SMS tracking actually works, what it can and cannot see, and how six apps that use it compare: SkyloFin, Axio, PennyWise, Vrid, Bluecoins and FinArt.

How an SMS tracker reads a bank message

A typical UPI debit SMS looks something like this: “Rs.450.00 debited from A/c XX1234 on 12-10-26 to VPA swiggy@icici. UPI Ref 6281XXXX. Not you? Call 1800…”. To a person, it is clutter. To a parser, it has five useful facts.

Card breaking one bank UPI debit SMS into amount, account, payee and date
  • Sender check. The app first looks at who sent the message. Banks use fixed sender IDs (like AX-HDFCBK). Good apps read only these finance senders and skip your personal chats and OTPs.
  • Pattern match. Each bank words its messages differently, and changes the wording now and then. The app keeps a set of patterns per bank to pull out the amount, account, date and payee.
  • Category. “swiggy” becomes Food. “bescom” becomes Electricity. You correct the odd one, and good apps remember your choice.
  • Balance. Many bank SMS include the available balance, so the app can keep your account balance roughly current.

On Android this is possible because, with your permission, apps can read SMS. Google Play restricts that permission heavily: an app has to declare it and fit an allowed use, and “SMS-based money management” is one of the listed exceptions. On iPhone, apps cannot read your SMS at all, which is why every app in this guide is Android-only for automatic tracking.

What SMS tracking catches, and what it misses

PaymentCaught by SMS?Why
UPI from PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIMYesYour bank sends a debit SMS whichever UPI app you use
Debit and credit card swipesYesCard alerts come by SMS
Credit card bill amount and due dateUsuallyMany banks send a statement SMS each month
EMI, SIP and auto-debitsYesThey debit your account and trigger an alert
Cash spendsNoOnly the ATM withdrawal shows; you add the rest by hand
UPI Lite paymentsPartlyBanks send one summary SMS a day for UPI Lite, not one per payment
Spends from before you installedOnly if the old SMS are still on the phoneDeleted messages cannot be read

Two quirks to know. First, one payment can trigger two messages (say, a bank debit and a card alert), so a good app avoids counting it twice. Second, a failed payment that is reversed sends a credit later; you want the app to show both, so the month nets out correctly.

SkyloFin

This is our app, so take that into account. SkyloFin reads bank and card SMS on the phone, with your permission, and keeps the data on the phone; backup goes to your own Google Drive, encrypted. It picks up card bills from statement SMS and reminds you before the due date, groups spending by category month by month, and warns you before you cross a budget.

Limits: it is a new app, so some message formats are still being added. When it cannot read one, it can send that format with every number replaced by dummy values, never linked to you, so support can be added. It is Android only and does not make payments. More on the method in how SkyloFin tracks your spending from SMS.

Axio (formerly Walnut)

Axio is the best-known name here; many people still call it Walnut. Its Play listing describes SMS-based money management with bank, card and wallet spends in one view, card due reminders, utility bill tracking, tags and receipt photos. The same app now also offers Pay Later, personal loans and fixed deposits, and some of its SMS permission is used for loan fraud checks, per the listing.

PennyWise

PennyWise is open source (AGPL-3.0) and on both Google Play and F-Droid. Its listing says nothing leaves the device, there is no sign-up and no ads, and it supports banks in several countries. It adds subscription detection and an AI assistant that runs on the phone. A strong pick if being able to inspect the code matters to you.

Vrid

Vrid reads SMS from banks, cards and wallets, categorises automatically, and lets you add cash spends and import stock and mutual fund holdings. Its listing names full support for Axis, HDFC, ICICI, IDFC and Kotak, with partial support for others, so check your bank before relying on it.

Bluecoins

Bluecoins is a full manual finance app that can log transactions quickly from bank notifications or SMS. It is strong on reports, reconciling with statements, bill reminders and net worth, and syncs through Google Drive or Dropbox. It is a good fit if you want detailed control with a shortcut, rather than fully hands-off tracking.

Want fully automatic tracking that stays on your phone? SkyloFin is free on Android, with no ads and no bank login.

FinArt

FinArt reads bank SMS, and also emails and app notifications, so it can catch a payment that arrives only as an email or an app alert. It has bill reminders, a subscription tracker, budgets, group splits and family sync, and it is on iPhone as well. It is free with in-app purchases.

How to test an SMS tracker in 10 minutes

  • Install it and grant SMS permission. Note how clearly it explains why it needs it.
  • Let it scan. Compare last month’s total for your main account with your bank app’s statement.
  • Make a ₹1 UPI payment to a friend. See if it appears within a minute, in the right account.
  • Check a credit card spend. Is it under the card, not the bank account?
  • Search for a shop you visit often. Are all visits there, in one category?

If last month’s total is off by more than a few transactions, look for which bank’s messages are missing. That tells you whether the app supports your bank well yet.

Frequently asked questions

Will an SMS tracker read my OTPs and personal chats?

A well-built one reads only messages from bank and card senders and ignores the rest. Check the privacy policy and the Play data safety section. SkyloFin’s answers are on Is SkyloFin safe?.

Does it need internet?

Reading the SMS happens on the phone. Apps that keep data on the device can work offline; backups and updates need a connection.

Why is my bank not detected?

Its message format may be new to the app. Banks reword alerts from time to time. Report it inside the app, and add those spends by hand meanwhile.

How do I set up SMS access in SkyloFin?

Follow allow SMS and notifications in the app guide. You can turn access off any time in phone settings.
