What Is HRA (House Rent Allowance)?

The part of salary given towards rent, partly tax free under the old regime.

Tax

The tax-free part is the least of: the HRA you receive; rent paid minus 10% of basic; and 50% of basic in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata or Chennai (40% elsewhere).

The new tax regime gives no HRA exemption. Keep rent receipts, and your landlord's PAN if rent is over ₹1 lakh a year.
